Do’s and Don’ts That You Should Know Before Starting Cello Lessons

In this article, I will share with you a few tips before your or your child starts cello lessons:

Congratulations if you or your child has decided to become a cellist. The rich and warm tones produced by the cello is very mellow.

Tip number 1:
Cello comes in different sizes, do go to a specialist retail violin shop or cello shop and get properly measured. For adults, the size is typically 4/4 size, petite adults can go for 7/8 size. Some even opt for 3/4 size.

For children, the size spans from 1/8, 1/4, 1/2 to 3/4 size.

We usually assess the size required based on body and arm span. Also check if the neck is comfortable for your hand span.

Tip number 2:
Be prepared to spend your time building your foundation work during cello lessons. Focus on scales and arpeggios. Get the muscle memory intact for both hand and arm movement before you proceed to simple pieces. There are also technique pieces you can go through to get this right.

Tip number 3:
Warm up before you start practicing. For your right hand, strengthen your hand so you can hold the cello bow well. The cello bow typically weights approximately 80 grams so you need to strengthen your right hand with exercises.

I hope the above tips can better prepare you mentally to start cello lessons.
