Flashcards: Helpful or not?

Are flashcards really helpful to kids? Does it help enhance the memory of a child in the long run?
I did one semester in shishida before with my #1...expensive courses..basically they just flash cards and do flash in front of the child repeatedly...
I bought similar cards from popular and tried for a while...it did work for memory retention..not huge but maybe helps like 10-15%. But requires a lot of commitment from mummy to flash..for 30-40 mins.
